Putting the cart before the horse doesn’t work well. Similarly, taking action before you’ve created a useful mindset doesn’t work.
So much of the time when your performance is sub-optimal it’s because you’ve jumped in and taken action without first creating an effective mindset.
The Positive Impact Of Your Actions Is Derailed When You’re Anxious
And anxiety has just one cause…
We become anxious when we imagine what we DON’T want to happen happening!
Therefore, when you’re experiencing anxiety, it’s essential that you take a moment to::
- Stop focusing on your undesirable outcome
- Step away from the anxiety and fear you’re creating and deliberately and purposefully focus on your ideal outcome..
When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed…
Sometimes you know that the time it’ll take you to complete the urgent items on your “To Do List” will surpass the time you have available, right? And this generally results in at least some anxiety, right?
Phil (not his real name) was overwhelmed and anxious about the length of his To Do List and his critical deadlines.
He wanted to jump straight in and get started on his highest priority item—which was to produce and then present a report on a crucial business issue. However he was anticipating that he’d struggle, both in producing a great report on time and then confronting a difficult audience when he presented it.
Like we all do so much of the time, Phil assumed the way to remove his anxiety was to put in a humungeous effort and take massive action!
Unfortunately that thinking was positioning his cart in front of his horse. He was putting all his energy into taking action—without first grooming his mindset.
A Superb Performance Needs A Superb Mindset!
Once Phil shifted his mindset by focusing on his ideal outcomes, his anxiety abated and things began to flow nicely. He designed a great presentation—and his audience reacted positively.
Just like Phil, when you carefully groom your horse, when you vigilantly manage your mindset, you’ll create a productive flow.
Your Leadership Call to Action
Before taking any action, put your horse in front of your cart.
During the next few weeks, be alert to situations when an anxious, unproductive mindset creeps into your thinking.
- Right now, what isn’t flowing as well as I’d like it to?
- In which areas could my mindset do with grooming?
- What are the ideal outcomes I’ll focus on?
As always, email me if you’d like support with this.
