He wasn’t sure where his career was going. He didn’t particularly want to remain in the industry he’d spent all of his career in, nor did he want to continue in the particular specialist sales and marketing area he’d worked his way into. And he didn’t feel confident that he could discover a suitable new niche, or present himself attractively enough to a new potential employer.
We began by looking at his career to date and from that, determining what an ideal job and future career would seem to be. With clarity about his accomplishments to date, and the capacity to clearly enunciate them, he became much more marketable.
Once we better aligned his self-perception with others’ perceptions of him, he was able to refine his presentation such that it was attractive to more job intermediaries and potential employers.
With that, and a polished resume and interview manner, he didn’t need to exercise his patience too much before a new role aligned with his ideal showed up.
This Human Resource Executive Needed Guidance…
This human resource executive knew he wanted to remain in the HR function—but he had recently had a bout of “bad luck” when it came to finding a role and environment that was right for him.
When we met he was feeling very uncomfortable: He’d made a couple of unsuccessful career moves. At that point, there was conflict with the boss, a culture that didn’t align with his personal values, and uncertainty about the future of the organisation, and therefore his role. His organisation had agreed to sponsor his Outplacement Coaching Program as a part of his retrenchment package.
Our work gave him clarity about what was important to him, in his life and in his career. It provided him with certainty about the sort of organisation, the type of culture, including the sort of executive leadership, which would align with his values and needs.
He walked away from our meetings knowing where, in the HR function, his greatest contribution and levels of enjoyment would likely be. He self-assuredly submitted his resume and his related marketing materials to his targeted employers, and self-confidently presented himself at interviews. He felt like he was in control of his career again.
After more than a year, in his new role, he was happily and successfully contributing to his new organisation.
